The United Nations and other organizations have repeatedly called for more attention for the supply of safe drinking water in developing countries around the world. In the words of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, “Access to safe water is a fundamental human need and therefore a basic human right. Contaminated water jeopardizes both the physical and social health of all people.”
This means that there is an urgent need for effective and affordable water disinfection solutions. One of the most promising is the use of UV (ultra violet) light. UV light can be incorporated in compact and economic filter units for use at individual household level.
